Big Stone Lake is a prime example. Located on the Minnesota-South Dakota border, it opens to walleye fishing April 18 this year, offering anglers a solid shot at great spring action.

Jon Thelen, a veteran guide and host of Lindy’s wildly popular Fish Ed television series, has the lake’s early bite down pat. He focuses on shorelines that attract waves of spawn-minded walleyes, and fishes them with a suite of simple yet deadly jig-pitching tactics.

“It’s so much fun to fish this way,” he explains. “When the fish hit, they just smash it.”
