Commuters, truckers and other road warriors might not have given Winter Storm Astro a warm welcome, but ice fishing fans across the north should cheer the Arctic blast’s arrival. The system, which is blessing states from Montana to Michigan with a blanket of heavy snow and bone-chilling temperatures, promises to help usher in an early start to the hardwater season.
“It’s a good sign,” longtime NAF friend and veteran guide Jon Thelen quipped this morning, while he and I recapped the past week’s hunting and fishing adventures. “Last weekend was the coldest deer hunting opener I can remember in northern Minnesota,” he added. “Water temps are falling, fast.
